C. W. Sullivan is the author, editor, or co-editor of ten volumes, including Welsh Celtic Myth in Modern Fantasy; The Mabinogi: A Book of Essays; Young Adult Science Fiction; Fenian Diary: Denis B. Cashman on board the Hougoumont, 1867-1868; and Heinlein’s Juvenile Novels: A Cultural Dictionary. He is a former editor of The Children's Folklore Review. In 2000, Sullivan was named a Distinguished Professor for Teaching at East Carolina University, and in 2003, he was named Harriot College Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences. Take a walk with Annie Dillard along the creek beds, meadows, forests, and mountainsides that surround Hollins, and you may forever see the world differently. This multimedia theatrical odyssey aims to honor Dillard's glorious and exacting prose, while inviting the audience into dramatic moments of visionary imagery and sensations that reverberate with startling awareness. A Hollins Theatre Legacy Series production, "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book written by one of Hollins’ most acclaimed writers, Annie Dillard (B.A. ’67, M.A. ’68). Jefferson College of Health Sciences (JCHS), an affiliate of Carilion Clinic, invites those interested in learning more about our Master of Science Degree in Physician Assistant (PA) to attend information sessions on the program this spring and summer.
 
Sessions will take place on the following Fridays:

•     July 25, 2014
 
Each session will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 616 on the JCHS campus at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, 101 Elm Street SE, Roanoke, VA  24013.
 
At this event, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the program, the PA profession and how to apply. In addition, representatives from the JCHS PA program will be on hand to speak individually with prospective students and their families.

Hollins Alumna, Lizzie Oglesby, class of 2003, will discuss the short film project “Virginia Voices,” sponsored by the Virginia Historical Society, and how people can get involved with the project. Virginia Voices is the first state-specific, crowd-sourced film of its kind - a modern historical documentary woven from the video submissions of Virginia residents. Renee Robinson is an American dancer from Washington, D.C. She began her dance training in classical ballet at the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet. She also attended the School of American Ballet, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and The Ailey School. Robinson was a member of the Alvin Ailey II before becoming a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1981. She has worked with many renowned choreographers, such as Alvin Ailey, Lar Lubovitch, Donald McKayle, Judith Jamison, Ulysses Dove, Jerome Robbins, Bill T. Jones, Garth Fagan, Katherine Dunham, Hans van Manen and Carmen de Lavallade. Robinson has also performed at the televised Kennedy Center Awards. Other televised appearances include performing at President Clinton’s first inauguration, American Express advertisements, the Bill Cosby Special on Alvin Ailey and on the PBS special “A Hymm for Alvin Ailey”. In 2003, she performed at the White House State Dinner in honor of the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki. Robinson completed her M.F.A. in dance at Hollins in 2012, and was the longest-tenured female dancer – 31 years – with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

VT KnowledgeWorks presents the Sixth Annual Entrepreneurship Challenge.  Please join us for two competitions as entrepreneurs and Virginia Tech students compete for prizes.

First, Virginia Tech faculty, staff, students, and/or alumni will compete in the Tech Transfer Challenge.  Hoping to establish a new venture in Blacksburg using their Virginia Tech-owned technology, the teams will compete to win $100,000 worth of mentorship and business support services.

Second, Virginia Tech student teams will compete in the Student Business Concept Challenge for $10,000 in scholarships, start-up services, and the opportunity to compete on a world stage next August for the $25,000 VT KnowledgeWorks Global Challenge Award.

Joe Lamp’l, host of Growing a Greener World, will be in Roanoke on April 25 and 26 to film a segment for his nationally broadcast series. The show will feature the City Market area with its farm to table theme as well as local restaurants and the green roof at Center in the Square. Joe will also talk with Mark Powell to highlight the Roanoke Community Garden Association and its success.

The segment will be broadcast in the upcoming fall season and individual copies will be available for development and promotional purposes.  After the taping, Blue Ridge PBS will partner with Center in the Square to host an invitational rooftop cocktail event with Mr. Lamp’l.
